Programs
Adult literacy
We offer individualized one-to-one tutoring for adults who wish to learn to read or improve existing reading and writing skills. In addition, we provide resources and assistance to caregivers working with individuals who need help with reading. Wilkes Literacy offers tutoring in three areas: Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, and High School Equivalency support. Wilkes Literacy also offers a weekly conversation group for adults learning English.
health literacy
Health literacy is the ability to find and understand basic health and medical information and services so that you can make smart choices about your health. It plays an important – and often overlooked – role in our wellness. Health literacy is not just about reading. Many people who have difficulty reading have high health literacy. The key is our ability to find information (be it from talking to a health care provider, online, taking a class or reading a pamphlet) and then being able to analyze or make sense of it and act on it. Despite advances in medicine, gains in health improvement are out of reach for many in Wilkes County because they lack the basic skills needed to manage their health in a complex health care system. Wilkes Literacy’s Health Literacy Program provides resources to improve health literacy among vulnerable populations in Wilkes County.
Children’s Literacy
Summer Educational Enrichment for Kids (SEEK) provides educational and recreational activities for children during the summer months. This program serves children in grades K-5 in Wilkes County.
